Ovoid Shamanic Drums

The Ovoid Shamanic drums are shaped like an egg, with a wider and narrower end of the oval, and are laced on the back with an equal armed cross. The shape of these drums, where they are taller than they are wide, means that larger drums do not feel as heavy as the weight of the drum is closer to you, and the ovoid shape creates much more varied tones as there are deeper tones towards the wider end compared to the narrower end. 

This shape of drum is based on the traditional drums of the Sami people of northern Scandinavia. Their Shamanic Drums would often be oval, and depending on the wood used, this could be more regular or more ovoid, and would sometimes be made with a skin stretch across a carved bowl. The shape that we use is based upon this style, but laced at the back in a similar way to our other drum styles.

I began crafting Shamanic Drums in this shape in 2017 to honour the links that many in this land have to Scandinavian traditions, either through their ancestry or their spiritual path. 

You may choose this style of drum because your spiritual tradition or ancestry has roots in Norse or Scandinavian lineages, and you want to honour that with the style of drum that you are using. 

Alternatively, there are practical reasons why you may prefer this style. Due to its shape, larger drums in this style do not feel as heavy to play, and so it allows you to work with a larger drum with a deeper tone, without it being as tiring to hold.
